About Copa América Femenina

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Copa América Femenina is the top competition for women’s national teams in South America. It is the women’s version of the Copa América and is usually shortened as Sudamericano Femenino. The competition is organized by CONMEBOL, and the entity’s ten teams are included in the tournament.

The number of teams playing in each Copa América has changed from time to time. The maiden edition, in 1991, was played by three national teams, while the one in 1995 saw five teams included in it. The third edition, held in 1998, was the first to feature a national team from every South American country. Another major change came when CONMEBOL decided to hold the competition consistently every four years starting in 2006, as previous editions were not scheduled consistently.

Copa América Femenina sees all ten teams drawn into two groups of five teams each, where each squad plays once against their group rivals. Those who finish the group stage among the top two in each group reach the semi-finals, while the third team from each group enters the fifth-place playoff. The KO stage ends up being quite relevant, as the tournament’s winner, the runners-up, and the third-placed team earn a direct spot in the FIFA Women’s World Cup, while the fourth and fifth-place teams make it to the inter-confederation playoffs. Additionally, the top two teams in the tournament gain access to the next edition of the Summer Olympic tournament.

Out of all teams that have played in this tournament, Brazil has proven to be one of the most successful.
