About Sudamericano U-17

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Sudamericano Sub-17 or CONMEBOL U-17 Championship in English, is a youth national team tournament organized by the South American confederation every two years for players under the age of 17. The competition was held for the first time in 1985 with nine teams, but it eventually included all CONMEBOL teams one year later in its second edition. The Sudamericano Sub-17 has been frequently used as a qualifying event for the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

The tournament’s format is quite simple, as it draws all ten teams into two groups of five. Each group sees a round-robin between the teams involved in it, and four teams make it to the next stage of the tournament. Once there, the top four face each other to crown the tournament’s champion, while those from fifth to eighth enter a single-match playoff, where those who finish in fifth, sixth, and seventh win a spot in the global tournament.

Out of the teams playing in the tournament, Brazil and Argentina have been the only ones to win it multiple times, but A Canarinha are the only team to win it over ten times. The Brazilian side has won the competition four times in a row twice to cement their reputation as the most winning team in this tournament.
