About National 3

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Championnat National 3, commonly referred to as “National 3”, is the fifth-tier men’s football league in France. It sits between the Championnat National 2 and the regional leagues in the Division d'Honneur (the French football league pyramid). Previously known as the Championnat de France Amateur 2, this division was founded in 1993 and is run by the French Football Federation (FFF).

The Championnat National 3 season runs from August to May. The number of clubs participating has varied, with 168 teams competing prior to 2023. Due to restructuring in 2022, this figure decreased to 154 teams in 2023-24, 140 in 2024-25, and 112 by 2025-26, with those 112 clubs split into eight groups of 14.

Teams play every other side in their group in a double round-robin format, competing both home and away. Group winners earn promotion to the Championnat National 2, France’s fourth-tier league. If a group winner is ineligible for or chooses not to be promoted, the promotion spot is passed to the next best team in that group.

The champion is determined among the group winners, based on the best record in matches against the next five best teams in their group. If two or more teams are tied on points, goal difference and goals scored in those matches serve as the first and second tiebreakers.

The inaugural Championnat National 3 season was won by a reserve team, with AS Beauvais lifting the title in 1993-94. Reserve teams have historically found success in this league, including clubs like AJ Auxerre, Le Mans FC, and FC Lorient.
