About National 2

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Championnat National 2, also known as “National 2”, is France’s fourth-tier men’s football league. Established in 1993 and organized by the French Football Federation (FFF), it was formerly known as the Championnat de France Amateur (CFA).

The league operates on a summer-to-spring schedule, typically running from August to May. Following the restructuring of the French football league system in 2023, the organizers decided to reduce the contestants to 48 from 2024-25 onward. The Championnat National 2 includes amateur, semi-professional, and reserve teams.

The participants are divided into three regional groups and compete in a double round-robin format, playing each opponent in their group both home and away. The winners of each group earn promotion to the Championnat National, the third tier of French football, while the top-performing group winner is crowned the Championnat National 2 champion. Reserve teams are not eligible for promotion.

The least successful teams in each group are relegated to the Championnat National 3, though the number of relegations has varied from season to season.

Reserve side AJ Auxerre won the inaugural season in 1993-94 and was the first team to win the title twice, achieving this feat in 1995-96.
