About Liiga Cup
History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Liiga Cup, or "the Finnish League Cup" in English, is Finland’s annual domestic knockout football competition. Founded in 1994, the tournament was abandoned in 2016 before returning six years later in 2022 under a similar format.
The Liiga Cup is held during the pre-season and is run by Veikkausliiga, the Finnish top-flight football league. As a result, Veikkausliiga clubs contest the competition; the participants are split into two groups of six, with the group stage following a single round-robin format, meaning each team plays every other club in their assigned group once.
Once this stage wraps up, each group's top two Liiga Cup teams progress to the knockout round. The knockout stage takes place over a single leg, including the final.
Four of the first five editions of the Liiga Cup were won by HJK, the biggest club in Finland. FC Haka, another Finnish football heavyweight, won the second edition of the Liiga Cup to prevent HJK from lifting the first five trophies in a row.
