About Kakkonen

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

Kakkonen is Finland’s fourth-tier domestic football league. Founded in 1973, this competition was initially the Finnish third football division from its inception until 2024, following the creation of the newer second-tier Ykkösliiga bumping Kakkonen down the league pyramid.

The league’s structure has been adjusted throughout the years. The participants are usually split into three groups, with the championship following a double round-robin format. This means that each team plays every other club twice (once at home and once away) during the regular football season.

The campaign typically kicks off in April and wraps in October. Once the regular season wraps up, the top-ranked teams from each group move on to the Promotion Round, while the lower-ranked clubs drop down to the Relegation Round. Kakkonen clubs play each team from their group for a third time in this stage.

The worst performing teams following the Relegation Round drop down to Kolmonen, Finland’s fifth-tier football league. Meanwhile, the Promotion Round’s best performers progress to the Kakkonen play-offs. Here, the teams fight for promotion to Ykkönen, with the winners earning tickets to the third football division. The number of teams that progress to the Promotion and Relegation Rounds and the number of clubs that get promoted/relegated each season has not always been consistent.

Despite its inception in 1973, this league was not known as Kakkonen until the mid-1990s. Furthermore, throughout its history, Kakkonen has altered between being a four-group system and a three-group one.

Reipas, Inter Turku 2, and GBK Kokkola were the first clubs to win Kakkonen’s Promotion Round after the league, which the Football Association of Finland administrates, was demoted to the fourth division. Additionally, the likes of Klubi 04, Atlantis, JIPPO, and others have enjoyed success in this competition since the start of the 21st century.

Former Atlantis FC striker Sakari Tukiainen made Kakkonen history in 2014 after finishing the season as the league’s top scorer with 40 goals, a feat no other player had achieved until that point.
