History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The U18 Premier League is the top-flight under-18 football league for Category 1 Academies in England, established under the Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP). Launched in the 2012-13 season, it replaced the Premier Academy League.
The season runs from August to May, featuring 26 teams divided into two regional divisions (North and South), each containing 13 teams. Throughout the regular season, clubs compete in home-and-away matches against all other teams in their division.
At the end of the regular season, the winners of the North and South divisions face off in a single-leg national final to determine the U18 Premier League champion. The victorious team earns the title and qualification for the UEFA Youth League in the following season. There is no promotion or relegation within this league.
Since its inception, the U18 Premier League has seen several changes. For instance, only 22 teams participated in its first season, which increased to 24 the following year. The tournament format has also evolved. Initially, the top two teams from each division advanced to the knockout stage. However, by the third season, the league adopted a secondary league phase for the top four teams from each division, with the overall champion determined from this round.
Fulham was the inaugural U18 Premier League champion, lifting the crown in 2012-13. A few years later, Chelsea made history by becoming the first team to win back-to-back titles, achieving this feat in 2016-17 and 2017-18. Manchester City went one step further by pulling off a threepeat, winning three consecutive trophies between 2020 and 2023.
