About Women's Super League

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The FA Women's Super League, also known as the FA WSL or WSL for short, is the highest women's football league in England. Founded in 2010, it is run by the Football Association (FA) and replaced the FA Women's Premier League as the country’s top-flight women's league.

During its inaugural season, eight teams contested for the trophy, with Arsenal Women lifting the title. This was followed by a reform — the creation of FA WSL 1 and FA WSL 2 divisions in 2014. The introduction of the two divisions paved the way for the implementation of the promotion and relegation system and, in 2018, FA WSL 2 was rebranded to what is now known as the FA Women's Championship. That league remains the second division for women's football in England.

The FA Women’s Super League follows a round-robin format, with teams facing each other twice per season, once at home and once away. The top performers secure qualification to the UEFA Women’s Champions League, Europe’s premier women’s continental club competition, while the worst performer gets relegated and is replaced by the FA Women’s Championship winner.

In March 2021, the FA Women's Super League unveiled an unprecedented three-year domestic television rights agreement with Sky Sports and BBC, commencing from the 2021-22 season. Sky Sports agreed to televise 44 matches per season with this deal, with Sky Go live-streaming fixtures as well. The BBC secured an additional 22 matches with the promise to broadcast 18 of those games on BBC One or BBC Two. All remaining fixtures would continue to be available for free streaming on the FA Player, the official over-the-top (OTT) service of the league's governing body. This groundbreaking deal is the first time that the WSL's broadcasting rights were sold independently from those of the men's league.

In the USA, CBS Sports secured exclusive broadcast rights for the FA Women’s Super League matches for the 2022-2024 cycle after signing a two-year deal. This arrangement began at the start of the 2022/23 season and features matches shown both on CBS Sports Network and streaming service Paramount+. This deal secured broadcasting rights for 57 matches in the 2022/23 and 2023/24 campaigns, with CBS Sports Network covering some games and the majority being live-streamed on Paramount+.
