About Denmark Series

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Denmark Series, known as “Danmarksserien” in Danish, is Denmark's fifth-tier men’s football league. Established in 1965, it is organized by the Danish Football Union (DBU) and serves as the highest amateur league in the country, positioned between the 3rd Division (the fourth tier) and the regional Series.

The league comprises 40 teams divided into four groups of 10. Each team plays every other side in its group both home and away, resulting in 18 matches in the regular season. At the end of this phase, the top five teams from each group advance to one of two promotion groups (Promotion Group East and Promotion Group West), while the bottom five teams enter corresponding relegation groups.

Each promotion group has 10 teams that play additional matches, with points and goals from the regular season carrying over. The winners of these groups earn promotion to the 3rd Division, while the runners-up compete in a two-legged playoff for the third promotion spot.

The relegation groups operate similarly, with the three lowest-placed teams from each group (six in total) relegated to the sixth-tier regional Series.

The reserve teams of the Superliga and Danish 1st Division clubs can participate, but the latter are ineligible for promotion.
