About 2. division

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The 2nd Division, officially known as “Herre-DM 2. Division,” is Denmark’s third-tier men’s football league. Founded in 1936, this competition is managed by the Divisionsforeningen and is positioned between the 1st Division (Denmark’s second tier) and the 3rd Division (the fourth tier) in the Scandinavian country’s football pyramid.

The Herre-DM 2. Division consists of 12 teams competing in a double round-robin format, where each team plays one another twice—once at home and once away—totaling 22 rounds. At the end of the regular season, the top six teams advance to the “Promotion Group,” while the bottom six enter the “Relegation Group.” All points and statistics are carried over to the second phase.

In the Promotion Group, teams play each other twice in an additional 10 matches, while the Relegation Group follows the same format. The highest-placed team in the Promotion Group is crowned champion, with the top two earning promotion to the 1st Division. Conversely, the bottom two teams in the Relegation Group are demoted to the 3rd Division.

Initially, this competition had two divisions: III Serie West and III Serie East. Fredericia BK and KFUM København won the inaugural titles of those two divisions, respectively. The league became unified for the first time in the 1945-46 season, with Odense BK emerging as the winner. It alternated between these two formats several times until 2021.
