About Prva NL
History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Prva nogometna liga, or the First Football League in English, is Croatia’s second-division championship. Founded in 1991, this competition is run by the Croatian Football Federation (HNS) and was previously known as the Second Football League (Druga nogometna liga) between 2006-07 to 2021-22 before the country’s top three divisions were renamed due to structural changes.
The Prva nogometna liga was initially split into two divisions – the Northern Croatian Second League and the Southern Croatian Second League – before uniting for the 2006-07 season onward. The champions earn automatic promotion to the Hrvatska nogometna liga (Croatia Football League), Croatia's top-flight league. Meanwhile, the number of teams that get relegated per season has changed throughout the years but regardless, demotion to the Druga nogometna liga, Croatia’s third-tier division, awaits the worst performers.
