About Campeonato Paulista A2
History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Campeonato Paulista Serie A2 is the second football category in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo. The competition is organized by the Federacao Paulista de Futebol (FBF) in compliance with the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) rules. The competition was held for the first time in 1916, although some records state there were tournaments in 1906. The FBF took control of the competition in 1947 and has overseen the competition ever since.
The competition takes place during the first months of the year, starting in January and usually coming to an end in April. Sixteen teams are involved in a promotion-relegation system, where the two teams with the least successful record being relegated to the Campeonato Paulista A3. On the other hand, the top eight teams in the league enter a playoff stage where the two finalists get promoted to Serie A1. All playoff series are played on a two-leg format where the better-ranked team hosts the second leg.
As time has passed, the Campeonato Paulista Serie A2 has been the home for some notable teams, including Portuguesa, RB Bragantino, and Sao Caetano. At some point in the competition’s history, all these clubs managed to win at least one title.
There have been many teams to win this title since its inception, but none of them as successful as Taubaté and XV de Piracicaba. Both these teams have claimed the title six times, although most came during the 20th Century. XV de Piracicaba claimed the most recent championship for any of these teams in 2011.
