About Campeonato Tocantinense

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Campeonato Tocantinense is the top soccer category in the Brazilian state of Tocantins. The competition was created in 1989 and is run by the Federacao Tocantinense de Futebol, which is supervised by the Brazilian Football Confederation. It became a professional league in 1993.

Over the years, the Tocantinense Championship has been played with a changing format that includes eight teams. The format sees all teams facing each other once during the regular season, where the top four will enter the championship playoffs. In exchange, the two teams with the lowest number of points get relegated.

Once in the playoffs, teams will play home-and-away series to determine those who fight for the title, where home-field advantage will be granted to the better-ranked team. If there is a draw after both games have been played, penalties will be taken to determine the winner. The league champions and the runners-up are both invited to play in the Brazilian Serie D, the Copa do Brasil, and the Copa Verde.

Two teams have dominated the league since it earned its professional status: Palmas and Tocantinópolis. These teams have combined to win fifteen titles between them. In fact, they share the honor of winning the title three times in a row: Palmas did it from 2018 to 2020, while Tocantinópolis accomplished something similar between 2021 and 2023.
