About Campeonato Roraimense
History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Campeonato Roraimense is the soccer tournament for the Brazilian state of Roraima. The championship saw the light in 1943, but it became a professional league in 1995. The Roraimao, as it is also known as, is the only state championship in Brazil with no second division, this given due to the small number of teams in the region. Additionally, it has one of the highest withdrawal rates in the country.
Given the complications caused by team withdrawals, the competition’s format has changed frequently. The most recent sees teams being divided into groups of five, where the first round will see them facing their group opponents. The top two from each lot enter the semi-finals, where single-leg playoffs are held to determine the winner. The second phase is similar, although this time teams from one group will go on to face those that belong to the other group. The same format is used in the playoffs until a team is crowned. The champions earn a spot in Serie D of the Brazilian championship and in next year’s Copa do Brasil, where they are joined by the runners-up. If the same team wins both titles, the club with the most points considering both competitions joins them in the cup tournament.
Three teams have dominated this competition ever since the amateur days: Baré, Roraima, and Sao Raimundo. Baré have won more than any of its peers (29), but the team’s struggles have forced them to withdraw from several tournaments, including the 2024 edition.
