About Campeonato Rondoniense
History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Campeonato Rondoniense is the top soccer category for the Brazilian state of Rondonia. It was launched in 1945, although it was not considered professional until 1991. The competition falls under the wing of the Federacao de Futebol do Estado de Rondonia, which is overseen by the Brazilian Football Confederation.
The league works with a promotion-relegation system, where all teams involved face each other twice. The top four make it to the playoffs, where home-and-away games are set to determine the champion. The higher-ranked team gets home-field advantage for the title clash. The winner gets access to the Brazilian Serie D, to the Copa do Brasil, and to the Copa Verde. The runners-up are invited to play in next year’s Copa Verde.
Due to financial problems and other issues, the 2024 edition was played with no relegation. Two teams disappeared and one was banned for two years, which forced the state’s football federation to suspend relegation.
Two teams have dominated the Campeonato Rondoniense over the years. The now-extinct Ferroviario won 17 titles during the amateur era, but were dissolved before the league went professional. The most winning team since the league became an official tournament is Ji-Paraná.
