About Campeonato Paraense

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Campeonato Paraense is the top soccer division for the Brazilian state of Pará. This competition saw the light in 1908, and although it has been suspended four times, it is one of the classic state competitions in Brazil. It is run by the Federacao Paraense de Futebol, which is overseen by the Brazilian Football Confederation.

The league consists of 12 teams, who battle from January to April for the title. The competition divides all teams into three groups, which face the eight teams drawn into the other lots for the regular season. The top eight teams in the league after eight games make the final stage, while the two clubs with the lowest points are relegated to the Second Division of Paraense soccer.

The final stage is held on a two-leg format, with the better-ranked team getting home-field advantage for the return leg. Those who win make it to the semi-finals, and those who are eliminated are sent to play in the Grao-Para Cup. The winner of the Campeonato Paraense is granted a spot in the Brazilian Serie D (if they are not involved in any of the upper categories), while also adding a berth to play in the Copa do Brasil and the Copa Verde. The runners-up are also invited to next year’s cup competitions and are also given a spot in the Serie D.

Teams from different cities have been involved in this championship over the years. Those from the city of Belém have won over 100 of those, including the ones owned by Paysandú, the most-winning team in this competition and who were involved for many years in the Brazilian Serie A, or Brasileirao.
