About Campeonato Mato-Grossense
History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Campeonato Mato-Grossense is a soccer club competition played by teams from the Mato Grosso state in Brazil. The competition was created in 1943, and it was previously known as Cuiabá Football Championship. The Mato Grosso Football Federation runs the tournament, always under the approval of the Brazilian Football Confederation.
This competition is usually held between January and April, mostly to give those involved in national tournaments a fighting chance. Each year, ten teams are involved in the Mato Grosso Football Championship, where they are involved in a four-stage process to determine the champion. The first is a round-robin stage between all teams, which leads to six teams making it to the second stage. Meanwhile, the clubs with the lowest number of points get relegated to the Serie B of the Mato Grosso Football Championship.
In the second stage, the top two teams access straight to the semifinals, while teams ranked third to sixth face each other in a home-and-away format. The winners go on to face the top two teams (pairings are decided by their performance in the regular season), using the same home-and-away basis. The title clash is also a two-legged affair, where the highest-ranked team hosts the second match.
The Mato Grosso championship grants access to many national competitions. The finalists earn a spot in Serie D, but that’s not all. Both teams will also be invited to play in the subsequent year’s Copa do Brasil and Copa Verde.
If a team from this championship is involved in a top national league, such as Cuiabá in recent years, then the league executes a two-leg playoff between the semi-finalists. The winner takes Cuiabá’s spot in Serie D.
As mentioned before, Cuiabá is one of the most successful teams coming out of this championship. The Auriverde do Baixada have won the Mato Grosso tournament several times, but the club still trails Mixto, who have claimed the championship 24 times.
