About Campeonato Amazonense
History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Campeonato Amazonense is a Brazilian competition for professional clubs of the state of Amazonas, Brazil. It is also known as Campeonato Amazonense de Futebol Profissional or as Barezao. It was launched in 1914 as an amateur league, which makes it the second oldest in the Northern region in this country. The competition was handed its professional status in 1964, when the Amazonas Football Federation and the Brazilian Football Confederation agreed to sanction the tournament.
There have been many formats for the regular season in this tournament, but the most recent change saw all teams being drawn into five-club group, forcing those in the other group to face them and tally five matches each. Once the regular season ends, the top four in each group reach the Quarterfinals, where one-leg clashes are held to get the two teams that play for the title, which is held at the stadium for the highest-ranked team.
The second round in this competition will see the teams from both groups facing the clubs they were paired up against, meaning they will play four matches. After four games, the top eight make it to the Quarterfinals to repeat a similar process to the one from the first round, until one team is crowned as champion.
Added to those rounds, there is an overall ranking that adds up to both tournaments. The top team will also enter the subsequent year’s Copa Do Brasil and Copa Verde, while the three teams with the lowest number of points end up being relegated from the competition.
Manaus’ Nacional is the most-winning team in Amazonense Championship history, with over 40 titles to their name. Nacional and Rio Negro are the only teams remaining from the league’s original lineup.
