About Campeonato Amapaense

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Campeonato Amapaense, commonly known as Amapazao, is the top soccer category for the Brazilian state of Amapá. The competition saw the light in 1944, although it was only acknowledged as professional in 1991. It falls under the wing of the Federacao Amapaense de Futebol, overseen by the Brazilian Football Confederation.

The league works under a promotion-relegation system, with eight teams commonly involved in the competition - although it may change. The tournament is held with all eight teams involved in a round-robin, which will hand out four spots to play in the second phase. Once there, teams are paired up against each other based on their performance during the regular season, and semi-finals are played on a home-and-away basis. The winners reach the title clash, where home-and-away matches are played to crown a champion. The winner and the runners-up are invited to the Copa Verde and the Copa do Brasil. At the same time, the champion is also promoted to Serie D. However, its place can be allocated to another team if they are already playing that league or higher.

As for those who are relegated, the two teams with the lowest number of points are dropped to Serie B in the Amapá football system.

Many clubs have been able to lift the trophy, with Macapá being the most dominant despite only winning one in the professional era. Speaking of those who became successful in recent years, Ypiranga are among the most consistent, having won most of their titles since the league became professional.
