About Campeonato Acreano
History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Campeonato Acreano, or Campeonato Acriano, is the soccer league for the Acre state in Brazil. The competition was created in 1919 and is organized by the Federacao de Futebol do Acre, which the Brazilian Football Confederation oversees. Campeonato Acreano games are held between January and April to help teams involved in national competitions such as the Copa do Brasil or the Copa Verde. The tournament began as an amateur football competition but turned professional in 1962.
The Campeonato Acreano is held under a promotion-relegation system, with eleven teams playing for the title and aiming to escape relegation. Before each season begins, all teams are drawn into two groups, one with six and one more with five clubs. After a round-robin between each group, the top three clubs from each group enter a final phase, where another round-robin takes place to determine the Campeonato Acreano champion.
Regarding relegation, the team with the lowest number of points is dropped to the Second Division. In contrast, the next-to-last team enters a relegation playoff against a Second Division team.
There have been 14 different champions across the Campeonato Acreano’s history, but none as dominant as Rio Branco. The team from the state’s capital city has won over 45 titles, making them the most successful club in this competition.
