About Armenian Premier League

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Armenian Premier League is the top football category in Armenian football. It was launched as a regional league within the Soviet Union in 1936, but when it became an independent country, it was developed and operated by the Football Federation of Armenia in 1991.

Over the years, the Armenian Premier League has worked under a promotion-relegation system, with the top-tier category being composed by ten teams. Each season, all teams face each other four times to complete 36 matches, giving the title to the club with most points. On the other hand, the least successful team of each season is relegated to the Armenian First League, while the next-to-last club enters a promotion playoff against the runner-up in the lower category.

The most successful team in this league is Pyunik, who dominated the 2000s with ten titles in a row. Their performance has attracted interest from fans all over the world, which have been able to watch the games via Armenia TV or on YouTube, who signed a deal with the league to stream games in Europe and North America.
