About Supercopa Argentina
History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Supercopa Argentina is a national cup competition operated by the Asociación del Fútbol Argentino (AFA). Like other ‘Supercup’ competitions from other football federations, it features the winners of Argentina's top-tier football league, the Primera División, and the domestic champion from the Copa Argentina. If the same team wins both titles, the Primera División runner-up is invited to play for the title. The first Supercopa Argentina match was played in 2012.
This competition is a one-match affair, played at a neutral venue, with a penalty shoot-out to determine the winner if a draw prevails after 90 minutes of normal time. Notable extended matchups in the cup's history include the 2012 and 2018 Supercopa Argentina finals, both featuring Boca Juniors and decided by penalty shoot-outs. River Plate and Boca Juniors – the country's most popular football teams – are among the clubs with the most Supercopa titles.
The Supercopa Argentina underwent a two-year hiatus that started in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic in Argentina. In 2021, the suspension was extended due to scheduling conflicts.
Notable stadiums that have hosted the Supercopa Argentina include the Estadio Bicentenario, Estadio Único Madre de Ciudades, Estadio Malvinas Argentinas, and Estadio Mario Kempes, Estadio Único and Juan G. Funes.
