What is the fewest goals scored by a team in a Betway Premiership season and are we close?

What is the fewest goals scored by a team in a Betway Premiership season and are we close?

The team from Bloemfontein has netted just 12 goals across their 22 league matches this term, marking a dismal output from their cautious approach to the game that offers the poorest entertainment value among elite division sides.

Even with their struggles to score, they hold a 10th position in the standings thanks to a similarly tight defence.

They have let in only 16 goals, leading to a combined total of 28 goals in both directions over those 22 outings, averaging 1.27 per game. Hardly worth the entry fee for supporters.

Surprisingly, just five players have scored for Siwelele during this campaign, including Siviwe Magidigidi with four, Vincent Pule on three, Tebogo Potsane and Chibuike Ohizu each with two, plus Kgaogelo Sekgota contributing one.

The club has recently transferred Magidigidi to Beerschot in Belgium.

It is reasonable to note they possess the feeblest forward line in the premier league, though this should not result in demotion.

Last term, Cape Town City suffered the consequences by netting 15 goals in a condensed 28 match schedule following Royal AMs collapse.

However, poorer performances have occurred in South Africas premier competition. In the 2007/08 campaign, Jomo Cosmos dropped down after managing a mere 13 goals in 30 fixtures. Consider that.

During that season, Cosmos drew blanks in 21 of their 30 encounters, with five of their goals arriving in a tight three day window via a 2-2 stalemate against Mamelodi Sundowns and a 3-1 victory versus Moroka Swallows. The remaining eight came in the other 28 games.

Anthony Laffor contributed five for the team, Reneilwe Letsholonyane added two, while Nkosinathi Nhleko, returning from stints abroad in the United States, Sweden, and Norway, scored once.

Both Jomo Cosmos and Tembisa Classic appear on the tally of lowest scoring teams three times apiece, more than any other outfit.

Yet, a scarcity of goals does not inevitably lead to the drop, quite the opposite in many cases.

In the 2023/24 Betway Premiership, Polokwane City recorded the poorest scoring record with 21 goals but secured eighth spot.

Sekhukhune United similarly faltered offensively, hitting 21 in 2021/22, yet finished 11th, and Bloemfontein Celtic tallied only 16 in 2016/17, sufficient for 12th.

The top mark among the bottom scorers in a full 30 match PSL season stood at 26 for Bay United in 2008/09, seen as decent nowadays. Still, it condemned them to last place and the drop.
