Tresoldi's rapid ascent: Reasons behind the talented Italian's unclear path with the national team

He is fluent in four languages at the tender age of 21. In truth, it is five, since he has mastered the art of scoring goals from a young age. Tresoldi handles Italian, German, English, and Spanish with ease, while also outmanoeuvring rival defenders who face his unyielding determination.

With a constant smile and modest attitude, he has long aimed to emulate his hero Filippo Inzaghi, adopting the skill of timing runs to evade defenders effectively.

This approach led to his opening goal in the 1-0 victory over Mechelen last Sunday, striking early after just under two minutes by beating the keeper and a defender at the near post with impeccable timing and a sharp finish. That strike marked his 13th in the Jupiler League, securing his position as the top scorer and underlining his exceptional current streak.

Tresoldi excels at seizing scoring chances

Out of those 13 goals, seven arrived in his most recent seven games, during a competition where his Club Brugge side faces its initial encounter with title holders Union Saint-Gilloise. It is an impressive sequence for Tresoldi, who swiftly settled into the Jupiler League following his time in Germanys second division. Fresh from a strong showing at the Under-21 European Championship for Germany, where he holds citizenship, he is demonstrating to Europe his prowess as a clinical finisher.

This latest moniker echoes the famed Martin Palermo, a left-footed Argentine akin to Inzaghi and sharing his mothers heritage. Yet Nicolo possesses a markedly better technical base than the typical poacher, and he links play adeptly. He thrives on late runs into the box, evident in his Champions League strikes, but he also proves versatile by retreating to connect with colleagues when required.

A pivotal moment

An ardent supporter of AC Milan (as he shared in an exclusive chat with Flashscore), the player born in 2004 is navigating a challenging phase. Securing a spot in Germanys senior squad appears unlikely, particularly with the rivalry from his fellow Under-19 colleague Nick Woltemade, who shares his surname.

For Italy, opportunities may remain open. It is intriguing that he stands as Europes most productive Italian forward. Mateo Retegui, by contrast, netted all 15 of his goals in Saudi Arabia.

This could stem from competing in a league perceived as less elite, or from not progressing through Italys youth system, but at present, Tresoldi seems absent from Gennaro Gattusos considerations. Still, he outscores Serie As top Azzurri marksmen Gianluca Scamacca and Moise Kean by five goals; those two, alongside Pio Esposito, earned call-ups for the World Cup qualifiers.

His professional journey now stands at a critical juncture regarding international prospects. This holds especially as he has one more Under-21 Euro with Germany ahead, scheduled for summer 2027 in Albania and Serbia.

Even if Italy qualifies for this summers World Cup, his entry appears oddly barred. As a contemporary striker of European calibre, only Pio edges him in potential right now, based on recent outings with Inter.

That said, he might just break through regardless, much like the powerful forward he embodies. This could happen via a return to Italy as a senior pro for the first time. Precisely as he has envisioned at AC Milan, inspired by Inzaghis celebrations. Forever wearing the grin of one who believes there is more to achieve, and who savours every moment on the pitch.
