'The kind of match you dream of playing': Sweden's Lindelof ready for playoff final

After a disappointing showing in the qualifying group stage, hopes for Sweden have soared following their convincing 3-1 semi-final triumph against Ukraine last Thursday.

Pressure accompanies those high hopes, yet Sweden's captain Victor Lindelof appears unfazed, eagerly anticipating the chance to compete in this major encounter on home ground.

"It doesn't get any bigger. These are the kind of matches you dream of playing," the defender remarked during the pre-match media briefing.

"I've been fortunate to feature in numerous high-stakes games before large audiences, but representing your nation adds a special touch," Lindelof continued.

"We are not just performing for ourselves, but for all the supporters present and those tuning in from afar. It is a significant and motivating duty that we all embrace."

Lindelof remains part of the team that found itself in a similar spot more than eight years back. Following a draw on the road, Sweden secured a 1-0 victory over Italy in Solna during the return leg of their playoff, earning a spot in the 2018 World Cup where they advanced to the quarter-finals.

"The vibe feels quite similar. The team has maintained a positive energy, and you can tell everyone is focused and prepared to put in the necessary effort," he noted, drawing parallels to the atmosphere from late 2017.

His captain's views were mirrored by manager Graham Potter, who savoured his inaugural victory in the role against Ukraine.

"This is an incredible chance. We are just one game from qualifying for the World Cup, it is a dream," Potter stated.

Among those on the substitutes' bench for the memorable Italy victory was Kristoffer Nordfeldt, now 36 and having claimed the starting goalkeeper position.

He started versus Ukraine, though a late goal prevented a shutout, and Potter indicated at the briefing that Nordfeldt's likelihood of keeping his spot is "closer to 100" percent.

There will be at least one alteration to the lineup, as Isak Hien has been sidelined with a thigh problem sustained early in the Ukraine match. Initially without a named substitute, Hammarby's Victor Eriksson joined the group yesterday.

Eric Smith has likewise been dropped from the roster after sustaining an injury in training at the weekend.

The press conference also featured a humorous exchange when Lindelof momentarily lost focus on the query posed to him.

"Sorry, what was the question? My thoughts wandered to something different," he confessed.

"It is not the first occasion a player has zoned out during my speech!" Potter promptly replied.
