Ten-man Midtjylland close gap on Danish Superliga toppers AGF after lucky triumph over Brondby

Ten-man Midtjylland close gap on Danish Superliga toppers AGF after lucky triumph over Brondby

Brondby 1-2 FC Midtjylland

With AGF drawing 1-1 against FC Nordsjaelland the previous Friday, FC Midtjylland saw an opportunity to reduce the deficit to the Danish Superliga frontrunners by playing Brondby on their home ground in Copenhagen.

The encounter evolved into a gritty clash full of intense physical challenges, lacking in fluid attacking moves. Yet Mike Tullbergs team broke the deadlock in the 61st minute, as Franculino on his second outing since recovering from a prolonged injury, buried a spot-kick. This followed Ben Godfrey handling a delivery from Aral Simsir within the penalty area.

The side from Jutland extended their advantage with nine minutes left, when Bartosz Slisz accidentally bundled the ball into his own goal off a corner deflected by Martin Erlic. Ousmane Diao then taunted Slisz post-goal and earned a second yellow, leading to his ejection.

Brondby injected late drama by scoring from the spot through Nicolai Vallys in added time, after Kevin Mbabu caught Benjamin Tahirovic with an elbow in the area. Still, the away side resisted to claim a tense victory.

Sonderjyske 0-2 Viborg

The remaining Danish Championship playoff game on Sunday saw Viborg grab a crucial 2-0 success on Sonderjyskesh turf, pitting two sides vying for league third place against each other.

Viborgs Jutland outfit reckoned they led after Zan Zaletel powered in a header during the opening period, only for VAR to intervene extensively and disallow it.

Three minutes post half-time, Viborg went ahead as Lukas Kirkegaard soared to nod forcefully beyond Sonderjyskesh custodian Marcus Bundgaard. The keeper was stretchered away to medical care later, following a heavy impact with Dorian Hanza of Viborg.

Towards the close, Tobias Sommer threatened to level for the locals, but Lucas Lunds sharp reaction stop maintained Viborgs edge. In stoppage time, Osman Addo confirmed the points with a decisive strike amid a Sonderjyske backline mistake.
