Sevilla Edge Clearer of Relegation Fight After Stunning Turnaround Triumph Over Villarreal
Sevilla kicked off the match one point ahead of the relegation spots and could have wished for their Champions League qualifying foes to relax their intensity, yet that notion vanished after just 13 minutes as Georges Mikautadze crossed to Gerard Moreno, who settled the ball to shake off two defenders and then nudged it into the far corner.
The situation worsened for the away side at the 20 minute mark, with Nicolas Pepe slipping a pass to Alberto Moleiro alongside the goal line, pulling goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos forward before Moleiro lifted the ball to the post for Mikautadze to finish with a simple touch.
Villarreal controlled plenty of the ball to seal the match prior to the interval, yet those two goals marked their sole efforts on target until they allowed Sevilla to claw back in the 36th minute. Lucien Agoume delivered a angled pass that Oso controlled smoothly on the run, dodging tackles and curling in only his second goal of the campaign with flair.
This effort boosted the spirits of Los Nervionenses, and although an equaliser before the break seemed lost after Neal Maupays shot was stopped, they persisted and earned their reward in stoppage time as Rubén Vargas intercepted César Azpilicuetas back pass for Kike Salas to connect with a clean half-volley.
With the reversal achieved, Luis Garcías team appeared more poised to grab a decisive fifth goal shortly into the second period, but it took until past the hour to trouble Arnau Tenas, who handled Neal Maupays bending effort without issue.
Their persistence nearly unravelled moments later when Moleiro regained possession just outside the Sevilla penalty area, though Vlachodimos responded sharply to block his effort through the bodies.
In the 72nd minute, the home supporters were left breathless as Sevilla flipped the script completely. Alexis Sanchez disrupted the move right after entering the fray, then Juanlu Sanchez and Djibril Sow shifted the ball through the box to Akor Adams, who blasted it beyond Tenas into the near corner.
Villarreals forward line surfaced only in the closing stages, but Jose Angel Carmonas clearance off the line denied Pau Navarros fierce rebounding header.
This result halted Sevillas streak of four straight away losses, while Villarreal surrendered points at home to a side that entered the match outside the top five for the first time this term.
