Racing past 300: Who has scored the milestone goals for Sundowns in the Champions League?

It is comfortably the most by any South African side and almost double the next highest tally of 157 by Orlando Pirates. Sundowns goals have come from 182 matches at a rate of 1.65 per game since their debut against Lesothos Arsenal in 1994.

Ahead of Sundays second leg of the decider against AS FAR where The Brazilians lead 1 to 0 from the home fixture we look at who scored their milestone goals in the Champions League.

1st goal vs Arsenal (Lesotho)

1994 CAF Champions Cup

Sundowns made their debut in 1994 when it was still only a knockout competition and were paired with Lesothos Arsenal in the first round.

The first leg was away and Sundowns claimed a 1 to 0 victory thanks to a goal from the late Bennett Masinga which proved to be their very first in African club competition.

Masinga spent nine seasons at Sundowns between 1987 and 1996 before later playing for Seven Stars Santos Hellenic and Bloemfontein Celtic.

He was the cousin of former Bafana Bafana striker Phil Masinga and passed away in 2013 aged 48.

100th goal vs Enyimba (Nigeria)

2016 CAF Champions League

It took 22 years for Sundowns to reach 100 goals in the competition as their participation was sporadic and they failed to reach the group stages on several occasions.

The milestone goal came in the season in which they lifted the trophy but also in defeat in their final pool game against Enyimba where they went down 3 to 1.

Percy Tau scored their consolation goal that day which brought up their century as he levelled the game for Sundowns.

Tau played 21 Champions League matches for Sundowns scoring three goals but his overall tally stands at 61 appearances and 15 goals after starring for Al Ahly whom he joined after leaving The Brazilians for Europe.

200th goal vs Union Maniema (DR Congo)

2021/22 CAF Champions League

Sundowns increased participation in the Champions League meant it took only five years before they added another 100 goals to their tally.

This landmark strike came as the second goal in a 2 to 2 draw away to DR Congo club Maniema Union in the second round in 2021/22.

Themba Zwane netted the first from the penalty spot and then added a second six minutes from the end which was the clubs 200th goal in the competition.

He has been a stalwart for the club since his debut in 2011 and while his influence may be waning at the age of 36 he still has plenty to offer with his experience and quality on the ball.

He has made 81 appearances for Sundowns in the Champions League scoring 15 goals.

300th goal vs Esperance (Tunisia)

2025/26 CAF Champions League

Sundowns have kept up the pace and five years later reached their 300th goal in the Champions League.

That was scored by Colombian import Brayan Leon who only joined the club in January but has already made a huge impact even if he did not have his best game against AS FAR at the weekend.

He scored in the 1 to 0 home win over Esperance that took Sundowns into the final with a 2 to 0 aggregate victory his fifth goal in nine appearances in the competition since moving to Chloorkop.

He was an expensive buy at a reported fee of 2.7 million (R52 million) but will be worth every cent if he helps the side lift the trophy this coming weekend.
