Premier League Probes Claims of Discriminatory Fan Abuse During Newcastle Sunderland Clash

The episode took place soon after the interval in the heated north east showdown as Newcastle defender Sven Botman got medical attention for a head knock prompting referee Anthony Taylor to pause the action for a short while.

"The game today pitting Newcastle United against Sunderland saw a brief halt in the second period following reports of abusive behaviour by spectators aimed at Sunderland player Lutsharel Geertruida" read the league announcement.

"This follows the Premier Leagues protocol for tackling discrimination during matches. The matter at St James Park is under thorough review. We stand fully behind the player and both teams."

Newcastle United expressed backing for the 25 year old Dutch international.

"We make no allowances for any kind of prejudice. We shall collaborate with officials to examine the case completely and make certain that those responsible face consequences" stated a club representative.

The disturbance overshadowed Sunderlands impressive fightback in the latter stages where they overturned a deficit to secure victory with a late strike from forward Brian Brobbey in the 90th minute.

"He seems fine. Such conduct is intolerable and it is vital to address and handle it correctly. He appears alright but we must provide him with assistance" commented Sunderland manager Regis le Bris.
