Mbappe Set for Ankle Assessment at France Camp: Deschamps
France head coach Didier Deschamps revealed on Monday that Kylian Mbappe will have his right ankle evaluated by medical staff upon joining the national squad ahead of the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualification fixtures.
The French captain sustained a minor injury during the final moments of Real Madrid's 3-1 La Liga win against Villarreal last Saturday, prompting concerns about his participation in the forthcoming qualifiers against Azerbaijan and Iceland.
"I spoke with Kylian and he mentioned a slight issue but it is not significant. Had it been serious he would not have reported for duty," Deschamps explained during a press briefing at the Clairefontaine training facility near Paris.
"We will allow the medical team time to review his condition and monitor how it progresses over the coming days.
"No further details are available at present since players begin arriving around 4pm (1400 GMT). We will reassess the situation once everyone is here," he added.
Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate will also undergo medical checks after leaving the pitch injured during the Reds' 2-1 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday.
Subsequently the French Football Federation (FFF) announced that Paris Saint-Germain forward Bradley Barcola would depart Clairefontaine following a hamstring injury diagnosis.
"Following consultation with the national team physician it was determined that Barcola has been managing a persistent issue with his right hamstring since PSG's Champions League match against Atalanta on September 17," the FFF stated.
This latest development compounds PSG's injury challenges as Barcola joins fellow French attackers Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue along with teammates Marquinhos Khvicha Kvaratskhelia Fabian Ruiz and Joao Neves in the treatment room.
Les Bleus currently lead their qualifying group with two victories from two matches. They will face Azerbaijan at Parc des Princes in Paris this Friday before travelling to Iceland for their next fixture on Monday.
