Marcelino to depart Villarreal at season's end

The 60 year old coach, who previously led the side from 2013 to 2016 and secured their promotion to the Spanish top division, has managed more Villarreal fixtures than any other, totalling 298 across all tournaments.

Villarreal hold third place in LaLiga with four fixtures left, ensuring participation in premier European competition next term. This will be their first ever consecutive seasons in the Champions League.

Yet, sources indicate the club intended to propose just a one year renewal, while he sought to establish an enduring vision. Thus, they will separate.

Marcelino returned to Villarreal in 2023, following triumphs in the Copa del Rey with Valencia in 2019 and the Spanish Super Cup alongside Athletic Bilbao in 2021. Speculation ties him to potential roles in the English Premier League.
