Mamelodi Sundowns Claim Narrow Win Against Esperance in Intense CAF Champions League Match in Rades

This outcome creates a chance for The Brazilians to reach consecutive Champions League finals, yet they have significant challenges ahead in the return match on Saturday in Pretoria.

These are the main highlights from the encounter.

Impressive strike

The key moment occurred in the 51st minute, provided by Colombian Brayan Leon via a header from close range.

It resulted from a finely built attack, with Jayden Adams sending a long ball to the right side, which Thapelo Morena volleyed towards the six-yard area, enabling Leon to move unmarked between two opponents and finish.

He remains a strong acquisition, achieving his ninth goal since arriving in January, four of them in the Champions League. He has featured in 10 starting positions across 18 total outings, giving him an excellent scoring record.

Missed opportunities

Arthur Sales has struggled with several near-misses recently, and the Brazilian once again positioned himself well for a shot but hesitated too much, leading to the ball being stopped.

He possesses great skill but seems low on assurance right now. Should Sundowns help him regain his sharpness, their offensive edge would sharpen considerably.

He has gone without a goal for Sundowns since his Champions League effort against Al-Hilal back in January, tallying only five strikes this season in every competition, which falls short for someone of his talent.

French player Florian Danho struck the post for Esperance with a forceful volley and then failed to convert a header later on, as the Tunisian team demonstrated their ongoing danger.

Disallowed strike

Esperance felt they had drawn level through Aboubacar Diakite, but the Video Assistant Referee identified a foul on goalkeeper Ronwen Williams that referees had missed at first.

A defender Hamza Jelassi elbowed Williams in the face while jumping for the ball with teammate Sales. This caused the ball to come loose, permitting Onuche Ogbelu to send over a cross for young replacement Diakite to head in.

Initially, it appeared Sales had impeded his own keeper, but after checking the touchline monitor, referee Mustapha Ghorbal confirmed Williams had been fouled, so Diakite's goal was cancelled.

Williams would have been wiser to punch the cross clear instead of trying to secure it, making it a fortunate reprieve.

Outstanding Mudau

Right-back Khuliso Mudau delivered two essential clearances in the opening half, explaining Esperance's interest in signing him at the season's outset.

Mudau absented himself from early matches while attempting to leave Sundowns, but eventually returned after the club refused to budge.

Grant Kekana also performed a clever challenge, aiming to catch the eye of national coach Hugo Broos for a return to the Bafana Bafana squad.

Yet Kekana earned a red card for a raised boot, a call that seemed somewhat severe since a caution could have been more appropriate.

Potential final rivals

If Sundowns finish the task, they are set to encounter Moroccan side FAR Rabat in the final.

FAR Rabat clashed with newcomers Renaissance Berkane in a local derby on Saturday evening, securing a 2-0 victory in the semi-final opening leg through goals by Ahmed Hammoudan and replacement Khalid Ait Ouarkhane in the second half.

Hammoudan netted first in the 58th minute, followed by Ait Ouarkhane's addition ten minutes before the whistle. The reply takes place next Saturday evening in Berkane.
