Lamine Yamals Brilliance Clinches Tight Victory for Barcelona Over Athletic Bilbao
Young sensation Lamine Yamal scored a stunning goal to give Barcelona a 1-0 victory against Athletic Bilbao in La Liga on Saturday.
The title holders extended their lead over second placed Real Madrid to four points after Madrid had narrowed it by defeating Celta Vigo the previous day.
After 68 minutes Yamal bent the ball into the top corner to decide the contest at Athletic Bilbaos San Mames ground in a fiercely contested encounter.
Manager Hansi Flick made changes to his Barcelona lineup ahead of Tuesdays Champions League last 16 match away at Newcastle.
Consequently the team appeared uncoordinated in the opening period producing few chances and straying from their usual fluid style.
"We are witnessing Yamals talent already he slots it into the top corner leaving the goalkeeper helpless" said Barcelona midfielder Pedri to Movistar.
"At such a young age he will only improve further.
"He must avoid complacency continue pushing keep training and relish playing because he contributes immensely to us."
Up top Ferran Torres struggled lacking sharpness in 2026 while Athletic Bilbao edged the better opportunities in a lacklustre first half.
Early Joao Cancelo struck the post of his own goal and Selton Sanchez broke clear but Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia dropped low to intercept.
Athletic Bilbaos Ernesto Valverde saw his team score before half time yet Inaki Williams goal was disallowed for offside.
Post interval Barcelona pushed for a red card to Alejandro Rego after a challenge on Dani Olmo while Athletic Bilbao sought the same for Pau Cubarsi who fouled Williams though officials issued yellows to both.
Gacia produced a solid stop to thwart Oihan Sancet soon after the restart in one of the few notable threats as the two sides beaten in Copa del Rey semis kept battling without breakthrough.
Barcaas teenage prodigy Yamal was subdued for the initial hour compared to his norm but shook off marker Adama Boiro to open the scoring.
Coming on as sub Pedri spotted Yamal with room and with Boiro losing footing the 18 year old curled it into the top corner via the post marking his 19th strike this season in all tournaments.
This gem stood as the matches sole highlight and proved decisive.
"It feels awful we were superior and did not merit defeat" remarked Athletic Bilbao defender Dani Vivian.
"Facing the leagues toughest side today showed our quality its regrettable we could not claim the points."
