Juventus Reach Serie A Summit After 1-1 Draw at Verona

On Saturday, Juventus earned a 1-1 draw away to Verona, provisionally moving them to the top of Serie A, although the Turin side had to scrap for every bit of that point on the road.

Igor Tudors team sought to preserve their unbeaten run in the league and opened the scoring in the 19th minute via a shot from distance by Francisco Conceicao.

Verona levelled the scores prior to halftime as Gift Orban slotted home a penalty, and they thought they had claimed their initial victory of the term when Suat Serdar nodded in during the second period, but VAR ruled it out due to an offside position in the sequence leading up.

Juventus had overcome Inter Milan 4-3 the previous week before sharing a 4-4 draw with Borussia Dortmund at home in the Champions League during the week, and they appeared somewhat subdued as the Saturday encounter wound down.

Yet they sit atop Serie A with 10 points, one clear of Napoli, as Antonio Contes title holders face newly promoted Pisa on Monday.

Udinese have the chance to match Juventus points tally should they defeat AC Milan later on Saturday.

Earlier, Bologna recovered from a goal deficit to triumph 2-1 over Patrick Vieiras Genoa thanks to a penalty in added time.

Icelandic midfielder Mikael Egill Ellertsson powered Genoa ahead with a forceful effort in the 63rd minute, having dribbled into the area from the right wing.

However, a clever backheel by Santiago Castro restored parity for Bologna, and then a handball right at the end of stoppage time awarded the home team a spot-kick, with Riccardo Orsolini dispatching it to secure the victory.
