In 2005 Zwayer was given a six month suspension for his role in a match fixing incident.

The 43 year old Zwayer got this penalty from DFB the German Football Association because he served as assistant referee to Robert Hoyzer who faced conviction for accepting bribes to manipulate multiple 2 Bundesliga fixtures under his control.

Reports suggest Zwayer took a 300 euro payment before a fixture featuring Wuppertaler SV though he later helped clear his name somewhat by alerting the German FA to Hoyzers fixing activities supported by statements from three fellow referees.

Not until 2014 when the German outlet Die Zeit published The Zwayer File did the wider public become aware of Zwayers earlier punishment. In contrast Hoyzer received a permanent exclusion.

Zwayers comeback to duty in 2021 led Jude Bellingham to question his authorisation to handle Bundesliga contests particularly his handling of the December encounter between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich with Bellingham stating: You assign a referee with prior match fixing to Germanys top fixture what outcome do you anticipate.

Merely five days ago Zwayer oversaw yet another vital game on Danish soil as FC Midtjylland took on Nottingham Forest in the Europa League.
