Clashes After Colombian Cup Final Leave 59 Injured
Authorities reported that at least 59 individuals sustained injuries during confrontations among football supporters at the Copa Colombia final held in Medellin on Wednesday evening.
The disorder erupted as the game concluded with Atletico Nacional securing a 1-0 victory over their local rivals, Deportivo Independiente Medellin.
Social media footage captured numerous fans from both teams storming the field at Atanasio Girardot stadium while throwing objects.
Anti-riot officers were called in to regain control of the situation.
According to Medellins security chief Manuel Villa, 52 supporters received medical attention for their wounds.
Additionally, seven police personnel suffered injuries, as stated by officials.
No detentions have been announced in connection with the events.
Villa indicated that officials are examining surveillance footage to pinpoint those responsible for the chaos.
The disturbances overshadowed the festivities for the 43000 attendees at the venue.
Due to the ongoing turmoil, the presentation of the Copa Colombia trophy to Atletico Nacional and the medal ceremony for the players was called off.
In Colombia, it is standard practice to bar away supporters from attending fixtures involving top clubs to avoid such outbreaks.
However, the Medellin local government permitted Atletico Nacional fans, who were the away team for this fixture, to join the event as a gesture towards fostering harmony in the sport.
Mayor Federico Gutierrez labelled the participants in the violence as criminals and undesirables.
Independent probes reveal that Colombian football related violence has resulted in at least 150 supporter fatalities since 2008.
Official statistics on this matter remain unavailable.
