Bafana Bafana star leaves overseas club: Is he heading home to the PSL?

Tau, 32, scored one goal and provided four assists in 22 games for Nam Dinh this season but has been released as a free agent.

He is at the age where he may find it difficult to secure a club overseas, unless he decides to stay in Asia, but he would still have plenty to offer a local PSL team.

His wage demands would likely put off most suitors, but his experience and quality would make him an invaluable asset.

Tau has been linked with a move to Chiefs in the past and there will no doubt be an expression of interest there. He would certainly add value to a squad that has a lot of younger, less experienced players in forward areas.

Tau was once South Africa’s highest-profile player after a hugely successful spell with Mamelodi Sundowns earned him a move to English Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion.

There, he found game time limited and had spells in Belgium with Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, when they campaigned in the second tier, as well as Club Brugge and Anderlecht.

He linked up with his former Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane at Al Ahly in Egypt and had a mixed spell, but left having won several trophies, including the CAF Champions League.

He later joined Qatar SC and then Nam Dinh at the start of this season.

His return to the Betway Premiership would certainly be seen as a high-profile capture for the league.

He has been used sparingly by the national team since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he helped the side to third place. He is not expected to be named in Bafana Bafana’s World Cup squad.
