All Whites secure landmark initial victory against South American rivals

World Cup qualifiers from Cape Verde previously triumphed in a penalty shootout over Finland at Eden Park in Auckland, after their game ended 1-1.

Although Chile had defeated Cape Verde 4-2 on Friday, they struggled initially against New Zealand, with Dario Osorio receiving a red card in the 27th minute following two rapid yellows.

New Zealand responded immediately, as Kosta Barbarouses smashed in a volley from a corner in the 31st minute, and Elijah Just netted another goal just before the break in the 40th minute.

The score reached 3-0 when Jesse Randall converted from near the goal in the 60th minute, followed by substitute Ben Waine adding a fourth in the 71st minute.

Chile managed a late reply through Gonzalo Tapia in the 83rd minute via a quick breakaway.

This summer, New Zealand is set to compete against Belgium, Iran, and Egypt during the group stage in North America.

Cape Verde recovered from an early deficit to level at 1-1 against Finland, then prevailed in the ensuing penalty kicks.

Finland, fresh from a 2-0 success over New Zealand, held the advantage at the interval thanks to Naatan Skyttas goal right at the end of the first half.

In their World Cup debut this June, Cape Verde equalised in the 67th minute off a corner, where Sidny Cabral delivered for Kelvin Pires to head in at the back post.

Goalkeeper Marcio Rosa stopped two penalties to clinch the win for Cape Verde.

For their inaugural World Cup appearance, Cape Verde will take on Spain, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay.
