Mbappe looking to add to remarkable World Cup record by conquering final frontier vs Spain

France arrived at the 2026 World Cup as the team to beat. Champions in 2018 and runners-up four years later after their dramatic final defeat to Argentina, Didier Deschamps' side entered the tournament widely tipped to reclaim football's biggest prize.

Much of that optimism centred on a forward line few nations could match - and one that has more than lived up to expectations throughout the tournament.

A rejuvenated Michael Olise has been one of the standout creators with five assists, while reigning Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele has contributed five goals and two assists. Leading them both, however, is Kylian Mbappe, who is chasing a second World Cup title at just 27 years of age.

The Real Madrid forward has once again been France's talisman, registering eight goals and two assists to move level with Lionel Messi at the top of the Golden Boot standings.

Although the latter stages of the 2025-26 club season did not showcase Mbappe at his devastating best for Real Madrid, international football continues to bring out a different version of him. When the World Cup arrives, so too does the player who has made the tournament his own.

His eight goals at this year's finals took him past Miroslav Klose's long-standing tally of 16 World Cup goals, moving him onto 20. Messi has since edged ahead with 21, but Mbappe's strike rate remains unrivalled.

The Frenchman has scored 20 goals in just 20 World Cup appearances - exactly one goal per game. More striking still is when those goals have come. Twelve of them have arrived across just 11 knockout matches, underlining his habit of delivering on the biggest occasions.

Semi-finals are Mbappe's last World Cup frontier

Mbappe has found the net in every knockout round he has played at the World Cup - except one. The semi-finals are the only stage that continues to elude him.

France reached the final in both 2018 and 2022 by defeating Belgium (1-0) and Morocco (2-0) respectively, with Samuel Umtiti, Theo Hernandez and Randal Kolo Muani providing the goals on those occasions. Mbappe, despite playing a key role in France's attacking play, failed to score in either match.

The newly introduced Round of 32 has only featured once in Mbappe's World Cup career, but he wasted little time ticking that box off. He struck twice as France eased past Sweden 3-0 to begin another knockout run.

His record in the Round of 16 is even more remarkable. Across three appearances, Mbappe has scored five times - announcing himself to the world with a stunning brace against Argentina in 2018, repeating the feat against Poland four years later before scoring the only goal in France's 1-0 victory over Paraguay at this tournament.

The quarter-finals had also remained absent from his knockout scoring record after blanking against Uruguay in 2018 and England in 2022. That changed against Morocco this week. Despite missing a penalty, Mbappe opened the scoring in the second half as France booked their place in yet another semi-final.

Finals have never posed the same problem. Mbappe scored in France's 4-2 victory over Croatia in 2018 before producing one of the greatest individual performances in World Cup final history four years later, becoming the first player since 1966 to score a hat-trick in the final. It was not enough to prevent Argentina from lifting the trophy on penalties, but it further cemented his reputation as a player built for football's biggest stage.

That leaves only one knockout round unconquered. When France face Spain in Tuesday's semi-final at Dallas Stadium, Mbappe will have another opportunity to complete a unique World Cup scoring collection by finding the net in every knockout stage of the game's greatest tournament.
